Growth and dedication are the goals of this year’s inagural swim team. They have improved drastically over the course of the season. They have been dedicated to practice and training, although they have not faired well in meets.

“Our team as a whole has grown in what we know we are capable of. The team has given me a chance to do something I love again, and I am very glad about it,” said senior Sean Stiles.

Friendships have been made that transcend just swimming.

Over the year we have adjusted quite well to each other and have been able to grow and enjoy each other while at practice and at school,” senior Davina Ellis said.

The members of the swim team are very thankful for the chance to swim collegiately.

The opportunities and experiences that have been provided to us are tremendous and I am extremely grateful to our coach and our Athletics Department for everything that has been made possible by them,” junior Jessica Morales said.

We have only had a few meets throughout the course of the year, but each one has been extremely motivating,” Morales said.

With two meets remaining, the team is excited to see how the season ends. The next meet will be held in Long Beach from Feb. 10-14 and the final meet with be held in Missouri from March 3-6.
The Lions are committed over the next few weeks to hard training to prepare for the final two meets.

Our team is excited and ready to head out to Montana and make a name for ourselves,” Ellis said.

Softball started the season with two extra exciting games that ended in heartbreak. The Lions took on the Athenas from Claremont Mudd Scripps to begin their 2010 season at home on Jan. 30.

Game one started off fast when Claremont scored the first run in the top of the first inning. Vanguard responded quickly, though, as the Lions took advantage of Claremont’s shortcomings, scoring off a fielders choice and an error.

Both teams would score again, knotting things up at three each and forcing extra innings. After three uneventful innings, Claremont finally notched the winning pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning, a total Vanguard could not match.

The second game of that doubleheader was also decided later than expect, this time going into the ninth inning. Though it seemed like the momentum was with Vanguard after scoring the tying run in the seventh inning, the Lions lost the game 7-6 after an error committed by junior catcher Angela St. Croix allowed the winning run to cross the plate. When Vanguard took to the plate again, the bats came up just short to bring in the runner on third.

An opportunity for redemption came just a few days later as the Lions took on Southern Oregon. The first game was a pitchers duel for the first few innings, pitting Vanguard sophomore Stacie Salizar against Southern Oregon’s sophomore Jordyn Kurtz. In the end, Salizar would win the encounter with Kurtz by allowing just one run on five hits while striking out one.

The Lions’ scoring came in one fell swoop in the fifth inning when they scored all three of their runs, two of which came in by way of junior Angela St. Croix’s two-out single that drove in freshman Kari Bergerson and sophomore Amanda Omahen to cap the scoring for the first game.

The second game was all about freshman pitcher Kate Jablonski throwing six scoreless innings while allowing nine hits through six innings, topped off by striking out eight Raiders.

The Lions will travel to Hawaii to challenge three island schools from Feb. 11-13. Lions will return back to their home field on Feb. 19 to take on La Sierra University beginning at 1:00 p.m.
