The Spiritual Formation Department held a town hall meeting Friday, Feb. 19 for students to voice their opinions about the changes in the chapel policy made by the department alongside administration.

Almost 120 students filled Heath 100 and got a chance to interact with campus pastor Vince Beresford, Coordinator of Community Integration Megan McDanel, the three interns for the department and the worship leaders on campus.

As Vice President of Student Affairs Ann Hamilton, a key influence to the policy changes, was unable to attend, the morning was labeled a preliminary discussion. The department is planning a possible opportunity for students to meet with Hamilton and other administrators.

Four general questions were answered to begin the discussion, dealing with subjects such as what the old policy was, the $20 fine, the late notice of the new policy and why seniors no longer have to attend chapel.

Students were then allowed to form a line and ask their own questions or voice their own concerns about the policy. From the start, the tone of the room was hostile as students voiced their complaints about various issues including Soul Care Credit options, the petition process and the spiritual depth in chapel services as a whole.

“I feel like we have been in a seeker-friendly church where I have had no spiritual growth and really chapels just have been empty,” senior Kevin Bazan said.

After each question, Bersford, McDanel and the student workers were able to give explanations or answers, which often prompted more questions.

Communication professor Karen Nishie spoke of her complaints about the policy and the way it reflects on the department. In closing, she urged students to be a part of chapel and to play their part in the process of making things better for the university.

Students then continued to voice opinions, both positive and negative, and get their questions answered.

To close, the Spiritual Formation Department stated that they were willing to take any and all student complaints and suggestions via e-mail at spiritualformation@vanguard.edu.

The date, time and location for the next meeting is still to be determined, but will be publicized through campus mailbox, posters and Facebook.com.
